Music has always been a really important part of my life and that’s partially why my tagline for Mood Indigo Soaps says, “Make Your Skin Sing!” Music and singing are truly vibrant, joyful expressions of soul!! When I was a wee one, my Dad would take us to the local record store, Rhythm House, and we’d pile into a little sound proof room and listen excitedly to the newest release (Now remember, new releases in India were about a year or two behind new releases in the US!!). Then we’d lovingly return the LP’s to their sleeves and buy one to take home. Some nights, my Dad would open the large windows in our living room, turn off all the lights and make us “really listen” to his classical music LP’s, some 78’s, in the dark. Of course we found it immensely boring, but I also recall being moved to tears on occasion and sometimes just plain happy. Try it sometime and you’ll be amazed at the difference in the way you listen to music and experience it in your body.
One of my deepest regrets in life is that I never did learn to play an instrument!
I love everything, from corny (I’m confessing here…think Wham, Abba, Supertramp and REO) to Rock n Roll (Rolling Stones and The Ramones), to folksy (Carol King), to Bluegrass (David Grisman with Stephane Grapelli) to the latest Pop (Fun, Lady Gaga), to Beethoven, Stravinsky, John Coltrane, Lou Reed, Freddy Mercury, the Cramps and Velvet Underground. I think I fell in love with my husband because of his deep and abiding love of music and the wide range of music he introduced me to and still loves. We’d stay up until the wee hours of the morning as he’d slide one more LP onto the turntable and pick a favorite track for me. Sigh…nowadays I can’t stay up past 10 and I-tunes just doesn’t seem as romantic!!
Music can enhance or deepen emotions as it allows you to connect deeply with whatever you may be experiencing in the moment. Some pieces of classical music have the ability to reduce folks to tears in minutes, while others do the opposite. There is something about the vibrations, the beauty of the sound, tones and notes that evokes something deep and powerful within me. It’s hard to explain, but music is a powerful mood enhancer. Some tunes bring back vivid memories of my youth and lift my mood in seconds and others allow me to weep and grieve when I need to!! Then there's nothing like a little Parliament Funkadelic to get the old folks grooving much to the chagrin of my 14 year old. So when you’re feeling really sad, instead of trying to listen to something uplifting, try something sad and mellow and let the music take you to the places you’re afraid to go, or if you do really just want a pick me up, try something cheery!! Do check out some of the musical suggestions associated with my products on my website and facebook page and feel free to add to the list if you’d like.
Does music move your soul?? What do you listen to when you’re happy, sad, mad, bitchy or just plain blah??
